Measure the furniture and the narrowest points on its route before removal day. A sofa that clears the front door may still fail at a hallway turn, stair landing, elevator, or gate.

Measure the item in three directions

Record width, depth, and height at the widest points. For a sofa, include arms and back cushions if they do not come off. For a table, note whether legs detach. For a dresser or cabinet, empty it first and check for removable shelves or drawers.

Measure every pinch point

Record the clear opening of doors after accounting for handles and stops. Measure hallway width, ceiling height on stairs, landing depth, elevator door and cab dimensions, gate width, and the space beside parked vehicles.

Route measurement sheet

  • Furniture width × depth × height
  • Front and interior door clear openings
  • Narrowest hallway width
  • Stair width, landing depth, and overhead clearance
  • Elevator door and cab dimensions
  • Gate width and distance to the loading position
  • Steps, sharp turns, fragile floors, and low fixtures

Clear the path

Move rugs, lamps, plants, frames, and small furniture out of the route. Keep children and pets in a separate area. Tell the crew about loose rails, wet surfaces, or flooring that needs protection.

Ask before disassembly

Do not assume every piece can be taken apart or reassembled. Share photographs of the item, joints, and path when requesting an estimate. Some pieces require tools or more handling time; others may be safer to leave assembled.

Check municipal options for small jobs

Manatee County’s current bulk program lists many household furniture items and explains preparation and scheduling rules for eligible residential customers. Availability depends on address, item type, size, and program terms. A private removal service is useful when municipal limits, timing, interior lifting, or multiple rooms make curbside service a poor fit.
